งานแผ่นดินสมเด็จพระนารายณ์ จัดขึ้นครั้งแรก เมื่อวันที่ 17-18 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ.2522 จากแนวคิดของชมรมอนุรักษ์โบราณวัตถุสถานและสิ่งแวดล้อมจังหวัดลพบุรี กับนายเชาวน์วัศ สุดลาภา ผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดลพบุรีในขณะนั้น ที่จะพัฒนาเมืองลพบุรีให้เป็นเมืองท่องเที่ยว และเพื่อเทิดพระเกียรติสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราชที่ทรงสร้างเมืองลพบุรีให้เจริญรุ่งเรือง เดิมกำหนดจัดงานในชื่อ "นารายณ์รำลึก" ในเดือนตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2521 แต่เกิดเหตุการณ์น้ำท่วมใหญ่ จึงเปลี่ยนมาจัดในเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ ซึ่งเป็นเดือนพระราชสมภพของสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราช / สารสนเทศน์ลพบุรี
